The People’s Elbow T-Shirt

 Then I, despite my cautions, did something so utterly stupid that I had to be blessed as we’d no trouble and it gives me insight on how people ignore warnings, and get into bad situations, when it’s absolutely the wrong thing to do. A young woman needed to get to her child, on the other side of the mountains in winter. The child was with the child’s father. I worked at night, I picked her up, and we began driving. This was before iPhones and smart phones, and we continued driving and in this case, I saw some barriers that I thought in part were for some local, immediate hazard as the local traffic were driving around them without hesitation. Well, those SUV’s and 4X4 Pick-up trucks were seemingly locals who pulled off to where they lived, and we were alone on a pass that I began to understand was CLOSED and we were in a little Saturn! So, I’d done something stupid, I risked a winter pass trip, to help a woman and I endangered her and I. There were some abandoned vehicles, big SUV’s! I don’t no how we made it other than we were watched and protected. We didn’t see many vehicles out there. We made it. Spent a few hours, which allowed conditions to get much better, and we came back, with the woman and her young child. We were blessed.

You don’t want to be trapped inside and UNABLE to get out. People get on the roof, if they can, and the wind isn’t blowing too hard. If you think you are not going to be able to keep your head above water inside the house, you have no choice but to go outside. You might be able to hold onto the house or swim to a nearby tree. And you might be able to improvise yourself a life preserver. A gallon milk jug, or any large plastic jug, makes an EXCELLENT emergency life preserver or float. Two two liter soft drink bottles are enough to keep your head above water. Be sure to tie them well to a strong cord of some sort, and tie the other end to your belt or around your waist or some way to make SURE your float / preserver doesn’t get away from you. If you handle it gently, you can inflate a trash bag, tie a good tight knot in the opening, and wrap it up in a sheet or blanket, to protect it, and it will hold air for a long time. If you put one inside another, and then wrap the two in a protective cover, it might last for days. There are things in most houses that can be used as floats. Gasoline cans, kerosene cans, paint cans, children’s inflatable toys such as a soccer ball or basket ball, even a spare tire for a car may be in or very near the house.
