Most of the same fundamentals exist as if you are investing back home, but I will deal with some caveats later in the answer. No it’s not. I am so tired of these pcp’s that do not respect the fact that I have established specialists that do my gyn and dermatologist exams. Went through several and I declined and some got really nasty with me. I finally found one that respects my choices. In the US this is not normal. The only exam where I have to undress every time is at the dermatologist for a full body check, but even at the dermatologist I am offered a gown. At the urologist the doctor has me drop my pants for the short exam. Every other doctor, including my PCP, tries to do the exam listening through my clothes or moving clothes around as necessary. Before my doctor retired he would have me undress down to my shorts. He would then exam me. Near the end of the exam he would have me stand and face him and have me pull down my underwear. He would do the genital and hernia exam. Then I would have to turn around and lean over the exam table. He would then do the prostate exam. I asked my new doctor about this and her answer is that it is not recommended anymore. Even the urologist doesn’t do a prostate exam each time.

In the ER, some doctors won’t even speak to the patient if we haven’t gotten them to put on a Johnny. They will walk right back out of the room, and that easily adds an hour to your wait. Rather than guess what mood the doc will be in, I ask people to remove at least their top half, and put on a gown, wear your sweater or jacket over it if you are cold. If the patient gets a different doctor, or if the cranky doc doesn’t end up examining under their clothes, they assume the nurse was being a bitch. You might ask me why you need to undress for a sore throat, I’ll tell you they need to listen to your lungs. You might say you’ll just raise your shirt, or undress when the doctor gets there….I can’t TELL you that you might get the whiny primadonna, and he’ll just walk out.
